Chapter 8 Picture This
In the center of town (a 2 block spread) was the Home Theater. John Osborn and his wife operated it. He delighted in inviting us all in for a free show as we were going home from school. We would be thrilled over the free movie, but just as the picture got to the most exciting part, he would turn it off and tell us to go home and get a dime and come back for the rest of the show! Every Saturday evening he ran a “Special Serial” which went on and on each Saturday. It was like reading the chapters in a book. Of course it was so exciting that no one wanted to miss a single episode so it was good business on his part.
Mrs. Miranda played the piano for the show, which were of course silent movies at that time. She was extremely talented and able to switch from a wild frantic tempo to a slow romantic tune and so forth without a hesitation. Everyone read aloud the dialogue as it appeared on the screen. It might be fun to go to a movie like this again. It was a far cry from the sophisticated shows of today. But everyone was entertained and happy with the simplicity of those times.
Later a new movie house opened at the other end of town. It was operated by the Links. We went to the first show there and in the picture was a little girl about my size, wearing a blue rain cape just like mine. Everyone was shouting “Its Donna Medbourn!” That was a close as I got to being a moving star – just a look alike!
