Chapter 11

When I was eleven, my little sister Marilyn Maxine, was born.  It was a very cold, snowy winter day that January 17th.  I was staying at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  Grandma was at my house.  I remember that my aunts,Helen and June, and I were all sleeping in one bed to keep warm.  The telephone rang and Aunt Helen ran downstairs and answered the call.  She hurried back and whispered to June.  They immediately began hurrying me to get dressed for school.  We ran all the way to my house.  We went in the back door and I was dumbfounded to see the doctor’s bag in the dining room.  Grandma and a nurse dressed in white were bustling about.
There was an air of excitement settled on the house and I could hardly take it all in as I was ushered to the front bedroom to see my Mother and little baby sister.  We went on to school then and all the teachers were complimenting me on my new sister and all the kids were excited, too.  When noontime came I could hardly wait to get back home and absorb all that had taken place.

Dr. Slonaker and Dr. Wiseman had both been in attendance.  Dr. Wiseman was getting up in years so he was there mostly because he was our good friend and neighbor.  A few days later my Father gave me a little drawstring bag containing fifty dollars in gold coins.  I was to carry it to Dr. Slonaker’s office and pay for my little sister.  It was an important day in my life.  Sure wish I had that bag of gold coins today!
